Is Mercor legit for selling company data? What an owner can check

Independent and sourced. We feature companies that pay us a referral fee. Our scores and reviews don't change for it. How we earn

Mercor is a large company on the record: Mercor.io Corp is a Delaware company incorporated in 2022, and TechCrunch reported a $10B valuation after a $350M Series C in 2025. Its company data program names no seller and gives no price, and it confirmed a cyberattack in 2026 that was followed by proposed class actions from contractors, so the company can be checked but its deals with sellers cannot.1,2,3,4,5,6

On the record

What filings and reporting show about Mercor

Mercor's SEC notice from February 18, 2026 lists Brendan Foody and Adarsh Hiremath as executive officers and directors, at 181 Fremont Street in San Francisco. Dealroom, citing The Information, reported above $2B gross run rate as of June 2026, and Mercor gives no separate figure for its data program.1,8,3

Its one public data deal is a bid, not a purchase: Mercor offered $7.5M for Spirit Airlines' archive, Google won with $10M, and Mercor is the backup buyer.9

Why owners ask

Why the Mercor breach matters to an owner

Mercor confirmed a cyberattack tied to the compromise of the open-source LiteLLM project, and several proposed class actions from contractors who used the platform were filed on April 1, 2026, with allegations that remain unproven. Mercor says the attack hit many companies, that a very limited subset of its nearly five million experts had sensitive information affected with no evidence of fraudulent use, and that the impact on customer information was very limited. The extortion group Lapsus$ claimed up to four terabytes; those are the group's claims, and Mercor did not answer Fortune's questions about them.4,5,6,10,11,12

Owners also ask because the contact can come out of nowhere. AI Weekly, summarising The Information, reports that Mercor approached Warmly about its archives after HubSpot acquired that company, so a message after a sale is consistent with how it has worked, and it still needs checking.13

Five minutes

Five checks on Mercor you can run yourself

Search EDGAR, the SEC's free filing database, for Mercor.io Corp. A second filer has a similar name, Mercor.io a Series of What If Ventures Master LLC in Claymont, Delaware, and that is a different entity, so look for the San Francisco address.1

Ignore the domain date. mercor.com was registered in 2002, about 20 years before the company was incorporated, so it tells you nothing here. What counts is that the program lives at mercor.com/data and that anyone writing for Mercor uses a mercor.com address. Mercor pays people who refer companies, so the person contacting you may not work for it, and you can ask whether they earn a referral fee.14,15,16

Read Mercor's own update on the incident on its blog. It lists what it says changed, including outside penetration testing and round-the-clock monitoring, which gives you specific points to raise.10,17

Look at Trustpilot, which shows 2.5 out of 5 from 5 reviews. That page covers all of Mercor, not only its data deals, so it says little about how sellers are treated.7

Reread the payment line. Mercor pays by wire "upon delivery of the anonymized dataset to the buyer", typically within 2-4 weeks of the signed agreement, so the money depends on delivery as well as signing.18

What to ask

What to ask Mercor before you share anything

Ask Mercor for its price in writing, since none is published, and which lab would receive your data, since none is named. Ask for its SOC 2 Type II report and the period it covers, and whether seller data sits in the systems affected by the attack. Ask what happens to payment if delivery to the buyer is delayed.19,3,20,18

Check first

How to check Mercor, or any buyer

The same checks for every company we profile. We state facts; you decide.

  1. 1.Find the company behind the ad: a legal name, a registered address and named people.
  2. 2.Ask for a written offer and a sample agreement before you send any data.
  3. 3.Ask who removes personal data, by what method, and approve it before anything is exported.
  4. 4.Ask which AI labs will receive the data, and whether you will be told.
  5. 5.Ask how they are paid: by you, by the buyer, or from a share of your deal.
  6. 6.Get terms from at least one other buyer before you answer.

FAQ

Questions, answered with sources

  • Forbes Australia says Brendan Foody, Adarsh Hiremath and Surya Midha founded Mercor in 2023. The company's SEC notice gives 2022 as the year it was incorporated.21,1

  • Mercor says it pays by wire with no fees to the company, but its data page names no seller and gives no amount. Its one public figure is a $7.5M bid for Spirit Airlines' archive, on which it is the backup buyer.18,3,9

  • Mercor's update says no employee data was affected and the impact on customer information was very limited, and it describes the affected group as a very limited subset of its experts. It does not define employee data or mention companies selling through Mercor Data, so ask whether seller data sat in the affected systems.10,24

  • Mercor has approached at least one company after a sale: AI Weekly, summarising The Information, reports it contacted Warmly about its archives after HubSpot acquired it. Its page also names eight industries it wants, from legal and healthcare to logistics.13,25

  • We do not give scam verdicts. Mercor says it buys company data and it pays people who refer companies, so check whether the message comes from a mercor.com address, ask any outside sender if they earn a referral fee, then ask Mercor for a written price and a sample agreement.15,19,16

  • Mercor runs both: its expert work pairs contractors with AI labs, and Mercor Data takes company records. Reports on its revenue and size cover all of Mercor, not the data program alone.21,15,8

  • Every business is different, so this one is best talked through with the buyer you're working with. Their team goes over it with you before anything is signed.
