Is Scale AI's data partnership legit? What you can check
Scale AI, Inc. says it was founded in 2016 and said it was valued above $29B with Meta's investment, Francis deSouza is its CEO, and Meta holds 49% of it, so the company behind the Data Partnerships program is easy to look up. The program itself is harder to judge: its page names no seller, completed deal or license terms, and it labels its $10K-$1M+ range illustrative.1,2,3,4,5,6

On the record
How much of Scale AI is on the public record
Scale AI's size and ownership are widely reported. TechCrunch reported Meta's 49% stake in a deal put at $14.3B, with founder Alexandr Wang joining Meta, and interim CEO Jason Droege wrote that Scale remains independent. Scale's own terms name Scale AI, Inc. under California law, and it gives 650 Townsend Street in San Francisco as a privacy address.4,8,9
None of that tells you how the seller program runs. Scale's page leaves out whether a deal is a license or a sale, how long data is kept, when you are paid and what fees apply, so the size of the company is not evidence about the size of your deal.5
Why owners ask
Referrers are paid, and Scale AI's page leaves names unclear
The person who told you about Scale AI's program may be paid to. Scale's page offers "up to $50,000" for referring a company in its FAQ and "$10,000" on its referral tab, paid when Scale signs a partnership agreement, so a pitch can come from someone who does not work for Scale.7
The page also says employee and customer identities never leave, while saying chat keeps participants "preserved intact", email keeps senders and recipients, and files keep authorship. It does not say whether those fields are swapped for codes, which is the first thing to clear up.10
Five minutes
Four checks on a Scale AI offer you can run yourself
Find the program on Scale's own site at scale.com/data-partnership, and do not rely on a link or form someone sent you. A message from outside scale.com may come from a referrer, so find out who sent it before you reply.7,11
Ask the person contacting you whether they work for Scale or earn a referral fee, then look them up on LinkedIn. Scale says referrals must go through its official process.7
Skip the domain date, which misleads here. scale.com was registered in 1997, long before the company was founded in 2016.12,1
Compare your company with the page. Scale calls 40+ employees its preferred starting point, assessed case by case, and lists industries from software and law firms to freight brokerage and hospitality, so an offer far outside that deserves questions.13,14
What to ask
What Scale AI should put in writing
Ask Scale AI for a sample record, so you can see how names are treated, and for the agreement before you scope any data. Ask whether it is a license or a sale, how long it keeps your data and when it pays. Ask directly whether Meta can receive your data, because the page names no buyers and does not mention Meta.10,5,15
Scale AI is not one of the firms we introduce, so go to it directly if you want its terms. Our match shows which buyers we do work with take a company like yours, so you are not judging a single program on its name alone.
Process
How it works with each buyer
In each buyer's own words. Where a buyer publishes nothing, we say so.
Scale AI
- Structured, de-identified records from warehouses (BigQuery, Snowflake, Databricks), chat (Slack, Teams, Google Chat), email and calendar, documents, work tools (Jira, Confluence, Asana, Notion, Linear) and platforms (Salesforce, HubSpot, Workday, ServiceNow, SAP, Zendesk)11
- "40+ employees" as its preferred starting point, assessed case by case, plus years of records in existing tools, real workflows, domain depth and a clear internal owner13
- $10K-$1M+, labeled "illustrative value per data partnership, scaling with cadence"6
- Anonymizes inside your environment before extraction and strips PII; nothing is shared without per-package approval; encryption in transit and at rest, a full audit trail, and on-prem and VPC options16
- Not published

How to check Scale AI, or any buyer
The same checks for every company we profile. We state facts; you decide.
- 1.Find the company behind the ad: a legal name, a registered address and named people.
- 2.Ask for a written offer and a sample agreement before you send any data.
- 3.Ask who removes personal data, by what method, and approve it before anything is exported.
- 4.Ask which AI labs will receive the data, and whether you will be told.
- 5.Ask how they are paid: by you, by the buyer, or from a share of your deal.
- 6.Get terms from at least one other buyer before you answer.

FAQ
Questions, answered with sources
Referrers do not have to. Scale AI's page pays people for referring a company, showing "up to $50,000" in one place and "$10,000" in another, so ask who you are talking to.7
Scale AI's page does not say, and it gives no exclusivity terms or retention period. Get that in writing before you scope any data.5
