Ventra vs Mercor: a broker or a direct deal for your company's data?
Ventra is a broker that says it takes your data to several AI lab buyers and shows you the best offer it finds, while Mercor says it licenses the data, packages it and pays you itself. Ventra names $100K-$2M as potential deals, not a guarantee, and Mercor's data page shows no price. Mercor names legal, healthcare and finance among its industries, and Ventra says it can't take those companies right now.1,2,3,4,5,6,7

The real gap
Ventra runs a contest between buyers, and Mercor says it does the deal itself
Ventra's pitch is competition. It says it brings your data to multiple labs and lab partners and shows you the best offer, not the first one, and it says it maps your tools and negotiates price and terms along the way. The trade is that the company handling your records is one you meet later: Ventra says each buyer or data partner has its own process for who sees the data and how sensitive details come out, and its terms say it is not responsible for what a third party does with it.2,8,25
One point to pin down with Ventra is who signs with you. Its site says you agree terms directly with the buyer or data partner, while on our call it said Ventra Holdings LLC was formed to sign the licensing agreements.2,21
Mercor says one pipeline does the work: extraction and anonymization are fully automated, no AI lab buyer sees your raw data, and its engineers oversee the system without manually reviewing your data. Its data page does not say who owns the data afterward, whether a deal is exclusive, or how long Mercor keeps it, so those are questions for your first call.18,3,26
Money
Both count from signing, and Mercor states the shorter wait
Ventra's 3-7 days is the time to an offer, so it can't be set against Mercor's payment date. From a signed agreement, Ventra says usually net 30 or net 60 and Mercor says typically 2-4 weeks. Each ties that to how long the data takes to collect and process, so ask for the date in writing from either one.13,14,15
Price is harder to compare. On a call Ventra told us deals usually run about $12,000-$15,000 per employee, sometimes more and sometimes less, and that prices had fallen about 20% over the prior month, which is a spoken figure and not a quote or a guarantee. Mercor says pay depends on data volume, the tools you connect and the depth of your data. Its public numbers are the up to $10M per enterprise in its LinkedIn ads and its $7.5M bid for Spirit Airlines' archive, where it stands as the backup buyer, and in our view neither says much about a smaller company's deal.27,3,12,28
Mercor's cyberattack
What is known about the Mercor cyberattack, and what is not
Mercor confirmed a cyberattack in 2026 tied to the compromise of LiteLLM, an open-source project. Its June update says its investigation is complete, that a very limited subset of its nearly five million experts had sensitive information affected, that it has no evidence of fraudulent use, that the impact on customer information was very limited, and that no employee data was affected. Those are Mercor's own findings.23,29
At least four proposed class actions followed in April in the Northern District of California, brought by contractors who used its platform. Those are allegations, and we have not seen a ruling. We found no reliable count of affected people, and nothing we read says whether companies licensing data to Mercor were touched, so ask it directly.24,30,23
We work with Ventra and not with Mercor. Ventra Holdings LLC only dates from September 2026, though it says it grew out of an older recruiting business, so ask each company for what it has actually closed. The quiz shows whether you fit Ventra or another buyer we work with, so you have a second number before you answer Mercor.20,21
FAQ
Questions, answered with sources
Ventra says its Chrome extension and data team map your tools, and its terms describe that extension reading page content in open tabs, which may include names, emails and messages. Mercor has you link accounts from 100+ supported tools, and says nothing leaves your systems until you approve it.8,32,33,19
