What are shop drawings, and are they worth anything to AI?
Shop drawings are the detailed drawings a contractor, fabricator or supplier makes to show how a part of a building will be made and installed, such as structural steel, ductwork or millwork. They may have value for AI if you hold years of your own, in CAD and tied to the jobs they came from, though no buyer publishes a price for them.1,2
The basics
How shop drawings differ from the architect's drawings
A shop drawing normally shows more detail than the construction documents, because it is drawn for the crew making or installing the item and leaves out what doesn't touch that item. Trades that rely on them include steel, trusses, precast, windows, cabinets, millwork, sheet metal, piping, plumbing, fire protection and electrical.1,3
The architect and engineer review it before anything is made, and changes from the construction documents get noted on the drawing for their approval. Fabricators then work from the shop drawing itself.3
For AI
Why a fabricator's own shop drawings might have value
Shop drawings might have value because they record the step most design files skip, which is turning a design into something a crew can make. That is our view, and few buyers use the term. They talk about CAD and drawings, and Ventra lists drawings, specifications, test results and change logs among the engineering records it wants.4
The closest proof we have is in Ventra's catalog, where 2 of the 31 listings come from metal fabrication work and 4 of the 31 include CNC or other machine files alongside the design files. Polyshares lists architecture and construction firms as in demand, and Pewter names construction and engineering among its strongest areas.5,6,7,8
What to count
Which of your drawings to count
Count the drawings your own shop made, and leave out the architect's set and other trades' drawings that came with the job. The most useful ones stay in their job folders with the review stamps, the marked-up rounds and any machine files, because together they show what changed and why.
Native files matter for size rules. Ventra told us CAD datasets don't need its 30-person minimum, but that statement doesn't name PDFs or paper, so a shop with only PDF sets should ask first. It still asks for 3+ years of records and a business in a listed country.9,10
FAQ
Questions, answered with sources
Construction drawings show what the designer wants built, while a shop drawing is the contractor's or maker's own version showing how one item gets made and installed. A shop drawing normally has more detail on that item.3
Contractors, subcontractors, suppliers, manufacturers and fabricators make shop drawings. Common examples come from steel, millwork and the mechanical, electrical and plumbing trades.1
