MyCase is built for the small and mid-size firm that wants one place for everything: the case, the client, the calendar, the bill and the conversation. That last part is what interests AI data buyers. A firm that has run on MyCase for years has client portal messages, internal chat, texts linked to cases and notes that only firm users can see, all filed against the matter they belong to.
That filing is the valuable part. A message thread linked to a case, followed by the notes and tasks on the same case, shows how a lawyer moved a matter from first call to close. Clova Data already names MyCase, with Clio and Filevine, in Meta ads aimed at law firms, and micro1 and Mercor list legal work among the industries they buy from.
MyCase is now part of 8am, and its terms of service are 8am's. Below: what MyCase stores in writing, how its Full Backup works and what it skips, the lines in 8am's terms on ownership, scraping, paid export and AI, quoted as published, and what to ask a buyer before you run a backup for them.
Worth
What a firm's data may be worth
Pre-set for a typical firm: 15 staff and 8 years of records. No buyer publishes pricing by industry, so industry does not move the band. Our estimate, not a buyer quote.
Buyers
Which buyers want this data
Each reason is the buyer's own published statement about the tools, data or industries it takes, matched to how MyCase law firms work.

micro1
Lists legal and compliance work and asks for internal comms and task histories, the two things MyCase files against every case. Its 30-employee floor rules out many MyCase firms.11,12,6
- $100K to $2M+, micro1 says8
Watch out for: Says it removes personal details only "when relevant", so ask exactly how.13

Mercor
Names legal among its industries and publishes no size minimum on its data page, which matters to a 15-person MyCase firm.14,15
Watch out for: It confirmed a cyberattack in 2026, and class actions followed.19,20
Nyne AI
Takes US firms with 20+ W-2 staff and 3+ years, a lower bar than micro1's, though its named tools are finance and CRM systems rather than legal software.21,22
- $100K or more, Nyne says23
Watch out for: Pays only after the dataset is accepted, and publishes no timeline.24
Buyer demand
How buyers' own tools rate MyCase law firms
No buyer publishes a price list by industry. These are settings inside buyers' and brokers' own estimators and intake forms, read from their public pages on 2026-10-14. They show how each company sorts industries, not what any firm was paid. The category shown is the one a firm would most likely pick; that match is ours.
| Company | Its category | How it rates the industry |
|---|---|---|
| Troveo | Legal | Tier 2 of 4: "Your industry carries above-average buyer demand." Price factor 1.15 in its estimator.25 |
| Polyshares | Legal | Marked premium in its intake list26 |
| VMS | Law | Higher weight in its estimator (factor 1.30)27 |
| Ventra | Legal, healthcare, financial services or accounting | Says it cannot take these industries right now28 |

What buyers value
What in a firm's records buyers value
The column on the right is not legal advice: it lists what to raise with the buyer before anything is exported.
| Data | Where it lives | Why a buyer values it | Raise with the buyer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Client portal message threads | MyCase messages, linked to cases | Lawyers explaining process, deadlines and bad news to clients in writing, with the client's replies in the same thread. | Every thread names the client; ask how names and facts are stripped. |
| Internal chat between staff | MyCase internal chat | Quick decisions about who does what on a file, the kind of coordination that rarely reaches a memo. | Nothing specific |
| Case notes | MyCase notes, each assigned to a case or a contact | Firm-only observations, since MyCase says notes are not visible to anyone outside the firm. | Notes that record a client's personal circumstances. |
| Text conversations linked to cases | MyCase text messaging | The short back-and-forth with clients who only answer their phone. | The help article describes printing a conversation, not exporting texts in bulk. |
| Emails linked to cases | MyCase email integration | Correspondence already sorted by matter, with attachments stored alongside. | Third parties on the email chain. |
| Task and workflow history | MyCase tasks and case stages | The sequence a firm follows for a practice area, repeated across hundreds of cases. | Nothing specific |
A week of records
A week of data at a firm
- Monday morning the portal shows six unread client messages, most asking when a filing goes in.
- A paralegal links two emails from a client's employer to the case and adds a note on the missing pay stubs.
- Midweek, internal chat settles which associate drafts a response, and the task moves to their list.
- A client texts a photo of a letter; the conversation sits on the case because the contact is linked to it.
- By Friday the case stage changes and the client gets a portal message explaining the next step.
Process
How it works with each buyer
In each buyer's own published words. Where a buyer publishes nothing, we say so rather than guess.
micro1
- Internal docs, SOPs and playbooks, knowledge bases, project management workflows, internal comms, templates, CRM and workflow metadata, task histories12
- 30 to 200 employees33
- $100K-$2M+ per data package; over $1M for unique data8
- PII removed "when relevant"13
- The company keeps ownership of its data and reviews samples before release38

Selling or closing
Selling or closing your firm? License its data first
When a small firm winds down or a lawyer retires, MyCase's terms say 8am may delete the account and its Customer Content at termination, and we found no set retrieval window. Run the Full Backup and any separate document pull before notice is given, then ask the licensing company what it needs from that archive.3,1
FAQ
MyCase data: questions, answered
Go to Settings, then Import/Export, and choose Contacts, Cases or Full Backup. The Full Backup builds a ZIP of CSV files, one per area of the account. MyCase allows one Full Backup a day and says it is very strenuous on its servers.1
8am's Terms of Service, updated August 2026, say in Part I section 15 that the customer owns all title, interest and intellectual property rights in the Customer Content. They also keep a perpetual license for 8am to use aggregated, anonymized content, excluding personal information, internally. We quote; we do not interpret.2
Two clauses name AI training. Customers may not use content from 8am IQ, or the MCP Connector and anything obtained through it, to create, train, test or improve an AI or machine learning system. We found no clause naming Customer Content exported by other means.45
For some. Most buyers want 20 to 30 or more: micro1 and Return My Time look for 30+, while Nyne, Cognor Labs and Goldmined.ai start at about 20. Mercor, Troveo and Jottings AI state no minimum. Clova Data's law firm ads ask for 30+ staff. About 12,815 US law firms have 10-29 employees.6,46,21,47,48,15,31,49,50,5
