For business brokers: AI data licensing as a pre-sale step
Your seller has a business to sell and years of company email, files and procedures behind it. AI companies now pay to license a copy of records like these, separately from the sale, and we checked the main brokers and marketplaces and found none that mentions it to sellers. For the right clients, it is a second payment you can put on the table at engagement.1
The gap
Is it big enough to matter to my sellers?
BizBuySell reported 2,117 closed transactions in Q2 2026, about $1.8B in total, an average of about $850K a deal by our arithmetic. Against that, the buyers' own published ranges for operating companies mostly run $100K to $2M, as their own claims. The ranges overlap, which is why the license deserves a line in the conversation, not a footnote.2,3,4,5,6
It is not for every listing. Most buyers want 20 to 30 or more employees, a few state no minimum, and some take law and accounting firms well below the usual floor. The angle fits the upper end of your book: professional firms, brokerages, agencies and trades businesses with real headcount. The quiz sorts a client in or out in a couple of minutes.7,8,9,10,11

What gets licensed
What buyers ask your sellers for
Buyers name internal docs, SOPs and playbooks, knowledge bases, templates and task histories, plus the email, chat, CRM and ticket systems the team works in every day. None of it is the customer list, and buyers say data held for clients is left out. The seller keeps the originals, so nothing is taken out of the business being sold.12,13,14,15
Referral programs
How referral programs pay, and their conditions
Some buyers pay referrers who introduce a business, and the terms vary by program, including when the fee is paid and who may present themselves as the buyer's partner. Ask each one for its written referral terms before you mention it to a client.16,17,18,19,20,21
Your sellers will ask anyone recommending a buyer who pays them and how much. This site answers it plainly: we feature buyers that pay us a referral fee, and our scores and reviews don't change for it.
| Fact | Value and source |
|---|---|
| Company referral payout | Up to $50,000 per referred company |
| Pewter partner program | Pays introducers 10% of what the business is paid, up to $100,000 per business, once, within 30 days after the business is paid and Pewter receives its fee |
| Mode referral program | US direct referrals earn the greater of $50,000 or 6% for the first five qualified deals, with higher lifetime tiers; $5,000+ when a referred company introduces another; outside the US 6% |
Sequence
Where it fits in a listing
Raise it at engagement, not in diligence. One law firm notes that a prior data sale will come up in the acquirer's diligence, with documentation of the review, exclusions and business justification expected. A license signed early and documented is easier to explain than one that surfaces late.22
