Selling an insurance book of business? The operating record is a separate asset

Independent and sourced. We feature companies that pay us a referral fee. Our scores and reviews don't change for it. How we earn

When you sell a book, the buyer pays for policies, renewals and carrier appointments. The book price does not count years of written work showing how your producers and CSRs quote, bind, endorse and handle claims, and AI companies now pay to license a copy of exactly that. It is a second, separate deal, and the time to look at it is before the book changes hands.1,2

Two assets

The book, and the record of how you run

A book of business is a list of accounts with a renewal stream attached. The operating record is the email with underwriters, the submission notes in Applied Epic, HawkSoft or EZLynx, the scripts your CSRs wrote, the checklist for a commercial renewal and the way a seasoned producer explains a coverage gap. Buyers ask for exactly this kind of material: SOPs, playbooks, templates and task histories, along with email, calls, CRM and billing records.1,3

Several buyers name financial services among the fields they take. None publishes an insurance-only price, and published ranges mostly run $100K to $2M, as the buyers' own claims.2,4,5,6,7

Who fits

Will they take my agency?

Buyers set floors on staff, not premium. Most want 20 to 30 or more people, and a few state no minimum. A producer selling a personal lines book alone will usually fall short, while a perpetuation sale of a whole agency fits better. The quiz asks your size and industry and introduces you to the buyers that take an agency like yours.8,9,10,11,12

What stays out

Dec pages and driver lists are not the point

The useful part is your agency's own know-how, not the dec pages, driver lists or health details in the AMS. Buyers say data held for clients is left out and personal details are stripped out before anything is licensed. Ask who does the removal, how, and whether you approve a sample first.13,14,15

Order of events

Before the book changes hands

We found no business broker or practice broker that mentions AI data licensing, so your M&A adviser may not raise it. If you want to explore a license, start before you sign a letter of intent for the book, so both buyers know about each other. micro1 says the company keeps ownership of its data, and whether a license can sit beside the sale instead of inside it is a question for the buyer and your deal team.16,17

FAQ

Questions, answered with sources

  • They are priced as different things: a book buyer pays for renewals, while data buyers ask for SOPs, templates, email, CRM and tickets. Whether your sale agreement already covers that record is a question for the buyer and your deal team.1,18

  • Yes. Several buyers name financial services or insurance among the fields they take, though none publishes an insurance-specific price.2,4,19

  • Most buyers want 20 to 30 or more people, and a few state no minimum. A whole agency usually fits better than a single producer's book.8,9,11,12

  • Published ranges mostly run $100K to $2M, as the buyers' own claims. None is an insurance quote, and the book is priced separately.5,6,7

  • Buyers say they keep them out, leaving client-held data aside and removing or replacing names and contact details. Ask whether you approve a sample first.13,20

  • Probably not yet. We found no business broker or practice broker that mentions AI data licensing.16

  • Do professional rules apply (AICPA, IRC 7216, HIPAA, ABA Model Rule 1.17, insurance agency contracts, adviser rules, state boards)?

Questions for any buyer

  • Is the license exclusive, and for how long?
