AI Data Payout

Updated October 2026

Should you ever pay an upfront fee to sell company data?

Independent and sourced. We feature companies that pay us a referral fee. Our scores and reviews don't change for it. How we earn

Someone asked you for a fee to get started, and you want to know if that is normal. It is not, in any offer we found: money flows to you, not from you. Most buyers charge sellers nothing, and brokers in the ads advertise no upfront fee and take their share only from proceeds.1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9

On the record

What buyers and brokers say about fees

Most buyers say they charge sellers nothing, though one that charges nothing now says it may add fees with notice. Brokers say the same in their ads, with lines like "No upfront fee" and "We don't get paid until you do".1,2,3,4,5,6,7,10

Free appraisals are the norm, not a paid extra, and buyers and brokers alike advertise a free valuation or estimate.11,12,13,14

So how do brokers get paid?

The middleman's cut comes out of the deal

Brokers are paid when a deal closes, usually by the buyer, as a share of commission or a referral fee, and some never hold your data at all. Buyers advertise for these introductions openly, with some offering up to $50,000 per qualified referral.15,16,17,18

Some middlemen do charge the seller, and brokers and marketplaces can take 8% to 30% of your price. Before you sign through any middleman, ask whether its fee comes from the buyer or from your price.19,20,8

If you are asked to pay

Requests that should stop the conversation

Walk away from a listing fee, a "certification" or "data audit" you must buy before a buyer will look, a deposit to hold a spot in a program, or software you must pay for to export your data. None of the buyers' published terms asks for any of these.2,1

There are real costs you may choose to pay yourself, such as your IT person's time to export files or your own attorney's review, and by one buyer's count moving the files can take up to 10 hours of technical time. Those are your costs, paid to your people, not to the buyer. Our quiz is free too, asks for no files, and introduces you to the buyers we work with that take a company like yours.21

  • Usually from the buyer at closing, as a commission or referral fee. Ask any broker who pays it and whether it comes out of your price.15,18

  • Some do, taking 8% to 30% depending on the marketplace and plan. Get the fee in writing before you list anything.19,20,8
