Appen alternatives: who else pays for company records
Centific, micro1, Polyshares, Mercor, Scale AI and Labelbox Prism all say they pay businesses for records like those Appen licenses. You might look elsewhere if you want a price or a payment date before a call, since Appen publishes neither, or if you need to know whether a license is exclusive.1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9
What you are comparing
What Appen offers an owner
Appen wants process documents, records of how decisions and escalations were handled, and systems such as ERP, contracts, HR and procurement. It states no headcount, years or region floor, quotes each partnership individually, and says it pays on acceptance with no upfront costs, setup fees or deductions. It answers within two business days and signs a mutual NDA before further discussion.1,10,8,11,12
Appen's contributor work is a separate path, and its Trustpilot page, at 1.5 from 371 reviews, covers all of Appen and not only its data deals, and the reviews we sampled came from contract workers and tool users, not businesses that licensed data.1,13,14
Price first
If you want a published price
micro1 publishes tiers of $100K-500K, $500K-2M and $2M+, and Polyshares quotes $100K-$2M+. SuperAnnotate gives an indicative $100K-$1M+ with a written valuation after the scoping call, and Labelbox Prism says smaller targeted datasets start around $50K and large partnerships reach $1M+. Centific, in our view the closest match to Appen, publishes no range either, though it says it gives a written estimate after the first conversation.15,16,17,18,19
A pay date
If you want to know when the money lands
Appen's page ties payment to acceptance and gives no number of days. Mercor gives a clearer clock, a wire on delivery, typically within 2-4 weeks of signing. micro1 says it pays in full within 30 days of acceptance, after up to 30 days of review on its site. Polyshares and Ventra both describe 30 to 60 day terms, which for Polyshares start once the data is approved, anonymized and delivered, and for Ventra start at signing.11,9,20,21,22,23
Exclusive or not
If you need a clear answer on exclusivity
Appen's page states no exclusivity terms, and neither do Centific's or Scale AI's. micro1's published license is nonexclusive and Endless says the same of its own, while Polyshares and Labelbox Prism both say exclusive by default, with Prism listing alternatives such as single-buyer access or time windows. SuperAnnotate counts exclusivity among the things it prices, so the answer can change your number.9,24,25,26,27,28,29,17
Closing down
If you are winding down and want a second path
A wind-down is where Appen says the most, claiming a faster path, a prioritized response and often the complete history. Centific offers a dedicated asset-purchase agreement for wind-downs, but its FAQ uses near-identical wording to Appen's, for reasons we do not know, so do not read the two pages as separate confirmation.10,30,31
For a truly different second look, Polyshares says it has a large appetite for companies that are winding down, closed or in bankruptcy, Pewter takes firms with 20+ full-time staff at their peak, and Ooak Data says a director, liquidator or administrator can sign. Labelbox Prism says wound-down companies are among its most active sellers, with a single payment that can happen inside bankruptcy.32,33,34,35
The money behind it
If you want to see a buyer's deals and funding
Appen reported first-half revenue of $119.9M, up 17%, of which Appen China was $76.2M, up 80%, and Appen Global $43.7M, down 27%, and it names no finished deal in this program. micro1 has committed $1B over 12 months and told a court it completed more than 50 data transactions in 45 days, without naming sellers or prices. Polyshares lists four deals with names kept confidential, none of them independently confirmed.36,9,37,38,39
Next step
When to stay with Appen and when to look on
In our view Appen is still worth a call if your company is too small for micro1 or you need a quick wind-down path, since it states no size floor. If you want numbers before that call, the quiz connects you with the buyers we work with that fit, and the seller ranking and our reviews cover the rest. On this page micro1, Polyshares, Ventra, Pewter and Grepped pay us a referral fee. Our scores and reviews don't change for it.10,40
